About Me

Trombonist Stephen Ivany is an active performer, clinician and educator across North America. He is the second trombonist with the Teatro Nuovo Opera Orchestra in New York City, regularly performs with the North Carolina Symphony and currently also substitutes with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. He has formerly held positions with Sinfonia Gulf Coast, the Ocala Symphony Orchestra, the Gainesville Orchestra, the Northwest Florida Orchestra, the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, and the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra.

As a soloist and collaborator, Stephen is always trying to push the boundaries of his instrument and has commissioned over 25 new works for the trombone which he has premiered in recitals across North America including such venues as Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center. During the 2018/2019 season he has given recitals at the 2018 NACWPI Conference in Vancouver British Columbia, Appalachian State University, University of North Carolina Charlotte, University of North Carolina Greensboro, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Furman University, Florida State University, Columbus State University, Troy University, as well as Memorial University in St. John’s Newfoundland. He appeared this summer in recital at the International Women’s Brass Conference in Tempe, Arizona as well as the International Trombone Festival in Muncie, Indiana. He also performed with the Southeast Trombone Symposium Professors Trombone Choir at Columbus State University in June. Looking forward to the 2019/2020 season Stephen will appear in over 20 recitals in North and South America with performances scheduled in Virginia, Maryland, Ontario, Ecuador, and Columbia. In 2014 Stephen released his first solo album, This Shall be for Music, with pianist David Chafe and has appeared as a guest soloist with the ECU Symphony Orchestra, the Triangle Area Youth Brass Bands (2018), the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra (2017), the Florida State University Wind Orchestra (2017), and both the ECU Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble (2018). In 2020 he will release his newest album, Monument, which features six new works for trombone in chamber music settings in collaboration with Aaron Hodgson, Candace Neal, Jarrod Williams, and Catherine Garner.

Stephen is currently the Assistant Professor of Trombone and Euphonium at California State University, Fresno. He is a faculty member at the Festival Internacional de la Mùsica FIM “Loja-Ecuador” and has served as a faculty member of the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. He was also a founding faculty member of the Tittulautet Nunatsiavuttini/Nunatsiavut Brass Band Program which from 2012 to 2015. He received his Doctor of Music from The Florida State University, Masters of Music from the Yale School of Music, and Bachelor of Music from Memorial University. He is an Eastman Euphonium performing artist and a Shires Trombone performing artist.
